How long does a rebrand take? A week-by-week timeline

> The short answer

A brand identity project for an SME usually takes 7 to 10 weeks from the first workshop to final files: about two weeks of discovery, a week of positioning, four to five weeks of design and a final stage for guidelines and handover. Rolling the brand out to signage, packaging and a website usually takes another one to three months.

Founders tend to underestimate how long a rebrand takes, then overestimate how long the design part takes. Most of the delay in real projects comes from decisions, not drawing. Here is how a typical project runs.

Weeks 1 to 2: Discover

Kick-off workshop, stakeholder interviews and sometimes a few customer conversations. The studio reviews your current materials and your competitors, and maps what is working and what is noise. Your job: make the right people available, and share honest information about the business.

Weeks 2 to 3: Define

The findings become a positioning: who the brand is for, what it stands for, its personality and how it should sound. This is presented and signed off before any logo is drawn. It is the most important sign-off in the project, because every design decision after it gets judged against it.

Weeks 3 to 7: Design

The studio develops two or three identity routes, presents them, and refines the chosen one over focused rounds. Then the system gets built out: colour, type, graphic elements, imagery direction and the first real applications, such as a namecard, a social post or a pack.

Week 7 onwards: Deploy

Guidelines, templates and final artwork in every format your team needs. Good studios stay on call during rollout, because the first real signage proof or printed box always raises questions.

How long does the rollout take?

The identity is finished; the rebrand isn't. Rolling out usually takes one to three months after handover, longer for businesses with many outlets or SKUs:

  • Digital: social profiles and templates in days; a website refresh or rebuild in four to twelve weeks.
  • Print: stationery and collateral in one to two weeks, allowing for proofs.
  • Packaging: artwork per SKU, printer proofs and production runs; often six weeks or more, depending on the printer and minimum order quantities.
  • Signage and uniforms: fabrication lead times and landlord or mall approvals can add weeks.

What slows a rebrand down?

  1. Late decision-makers. A partner or investor who appears at the design stage and questions the strategy sends the project back two stages.
  2. Slow feedback. A week of silence after each presentation adds a month to the project.
  3. Scope creep. "Can we also do the website?" halfway through is a new project, not a small add-on.
  4. Naming. If the name changes, add time for trademark searches and legal checks before design can settle.

How do I plan a launch date?

Work backwards. Pick the date that matters (a new outlet, a trade show, the financial year), then allow the rollout time for your slowest touchpoint (usually packaging or signage), then the 7 to 10 weeks of identity work. Add two weeks of buffer. If that puts the start date in the past, reduce the scope of launch day rather than squeezing the thinking.

Can a rebrand be done faster?

Yes, with trade-offs: fewer routes, a smaller rollout at launch and quick decisions from one empowered person. A focused refresh can be done in four to six weeks. What rarely works is skipping strategy to save time; it usually costs more time later.

Quick questions

How long does it take to design a logo?

Within a full identity project, the logo is usually developed over two to four weeks, after the positioning is agreed. A logo alone can be quicker, but without the strategy it often needs redoing.

How long does packaging design take?

Design for a key pack often takes three to six weeks; add artwork for each variant and printer lead times, which vary widely with quantity and finishing.

When should I announce my rebrand?

When the main touchpoints customers see are ready, usually the website, social profiles and the most visible physical items. A staggered, half-changed brand confuses people.
